Lady Lebbe
Once, at the spot where the Schaapdijk and the Veldweg meet, an old farmer woman named Lady Lebbe died. Some say it happened because she was carrying money and was murdered, others say it happened because of her frailty. She was found by the sheepherder of Norg, who reported it.
The marketers of Norg, to which Peest (the piece of land where she was found) belonged, refused to bury her because of the cost. The farmers of the mark of Zeijen ended up burying her, so the cost was covered by the municipality of Vries. The municipality of Vries then insisted a marker would be placed, showing that from that point onwards, the land where she was found belonged to the municipality of Vries. The marketers of Peest agreed to that. An oak wood memorial marked the location. Afterwards, it turned out that the mark of Norg had forfeited a large piece of land through the agreement, about 250 hectares of field, and this way the expenses of Lady Lebbe's burial, paid for by the marketers of Zeijen, were more than compensated for.
Poem
Lammert Braaksma (1891-1963), a well-known school teacher from the area who regularly cycled around the spot and wrote poetry about the stories he heard, wrote a poem about it, it is only available in Dutch (Drents) but can be found at the bottom of this page for reference.
Lebbestaok
Today there is still a monument at this location. It's a big old rock that came from the area. On the rock is the word: 'Lebbestaok.' Vrouw Lebbe is hier vermoord en te Vries begraven waarna een staok tussen Norg en Vries de grens moest gaan bepalen.’ (Lady Lebbe was killed here and buried in Vries, after which a stick had to decide the border between Norg and Vries.')
The old oak memorial has been there for many years. The one that had been there since 1949 was replaced by another around 2010. This 'staok' of Lady Lebbe, also known as Lebbestaok, is a famous item in the area. In 2020, the first Dutch gravel cycling route to pass this location was opened. The monument is provided with a new staok, which shall be made with wood from the region.

De lebstaok [poem]
Op de grote wiede veenachtige heide,
Dee vroeger de durpen Nörg en Vries scheidde
Leup ’n aole haalfblinde vrouw
Jong, ’t was zo kaold en de lucht was zo grauw.
